As the weather in Japan is gradually getting warmer, Golden Week (or GW for short) has started here in Japan; this is the long vacation holiday combining 4 national holidays; this year GW starts from April 29th to May 5th.
Typically trains, airports, and sightseeing spots get very crowded during Golden Week as this is the time of year when many return to their hometowns; travel abroad or to popular vacation spots within Japan. Overall GW travel is expected to be considerably down this year compared to last year.
Nonetheless this year many have opted to volunteer instead and several organizations are organizing weeklong volunteer tours during golden week to help the distribution of food and supplies to refugees in the Sendai area. Still many will travel this GW by car to take advantage of the ¥1,000 toll fee cap on all expressways in Japan, which is set to be disappear in June.
As well many will return home and or travel to destinations by Bullet train, the Tokyo-Sendai bullet train service resumed on April 25th and from the bullet train window passengers can view the temporary housing units in Sendai, Miyagi Prefecture for victims of the March 11 earthquake and tsunami.
Finally, Tokyo Disneyland (reopened on April 23rd) and Tokyo Disney Sea (reopened on April 28th) are expecting large crowds to return during this years Golden Week as many are looking for a much needed relaxation break.
